9 November 2018 (Los Angeles, CA) – Multi-genre, Sony/ATV music producer Bruce 'Automatic' Vanderveer and folk recording artist Michael Duca create a beautiful tribute with Duca's latest single 'Kathleen'.
“Kathleen comes from the heart, plain and simple. Who am I as an artist if I don’t strive to show what is real, in all its joys and in all it’s sorrows, about my own experience and the experience of others?"
"Her tears how they flow...nobody knows"
The refrain "nobody knows" haunts the listener with the perplexing reminder of that one can be so close to someone and so far from them at the same time. With all of the emotions that Duca carries from being so intimately connected with a loved one and still not being able to keep them from the harm, he sings 'Kathleen'.
"When I first heard about the passing of not only a friend, but also of an innocent and loving sister and daughter, I was completely taken aback. And I found no other means of coping with this news than to put it in a song. That afternoon I locked myself in my college dorm room and vowed to tell a story about what I saw as the beauty and tragedy in the life and death of a young girl. Whether some of what I say is literal or just metaphorical, I wanted to paint a picture showing the reality of drug addiction, while still maintaining the beauty and dignity of the soul taken by it. 'Kathleen', to me, is one of my most heartfelt pieces and also a reminder of the reason why I’m a singer and songwriter. In writing Kathleen I hoped to bring peace and clarity not only to her family, but also to anyone else who has been through the same experience with a loved one.”
Only takes one high
So hide from ‘im
Only takes one eye to see
Black tar sighs
Until your veins quicken
Black tar sings
“Come and dance with me,
Automatic recalls working with Duca on 'Kathleen': "When Duca and I first met, he played for me his best songs and 'Kathleen' was the most moving and hauntingly beautiful. I chose to produce this song because of its universal underlying message. Everyone can find something to connect to in this song because we all have experienced loss in some way. I knew right away that I wanted to use a unique layering technique with the guitars and create a musical bed for the melodic structure so people can appreciate the lyrics and the listener can feel like they're on the receiving end of an intimate conversation. I believe the recording academy should take a special look at this song. It's timeless."

About Michael Duca
Michael Duca is an LA-based folk/rock singer and songwriter from the scenic Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. He fell in love with music at the tender age of 12 when his Uncle Bob gifted him a Stratocaster, and under his guidance, Michael grew up playing folk, blues, and rock, in addition to singing in local choirs and a capella groups. After graduating high school Michael dove into the L.A. scene, playing a succession of popular open mics and small clubs. After showcasing his demo tracks to various local producers he was able to release his first studio EP in 2017 which gained significant traction both online and in his college town of Front Royal were he currently pursues an undergraduate degree in Philosophy (stay in school kids). Following his first independent release he attracted the interest of producer Bruce “Automatic” Vanderveer of InRage Entertainment and Sony/ATV. After his college graduation Michael plans on permanently relocating to Los Angeles to continue his full time career as a composer, performer, chronic over-thinker, musician, and recording artist.
